Dungeons

While dungeons are unchanged, the Ancient Relics gamemode requires players to complete dungeons to increase their skill levels, which are otherwise locked to a very low level.

While dungeons can be completed in any order, the following is a suggested order based on the max hit of the boss of each dungeon, including a link to the guide to that dungeon, as well as the combat level cap the player will have for that dungeon.

Lvl Dungeon Guide Max
10 Chicken Coop Chicken Coop/Guide 52
15 Undead Graveyard Undead Graveyard/Guide 106
20 Spider Forest Spider Forest/Guide 142
25 Frozen Cove Frozen Cove/Guide 172
30 Deep Sea Ship Deep Sea Ship/Guide 204
35 Bandit Base Bandit Base/Guide 174
40 Hall of Wizards Hall of Wizards/Guide 208
45 Miolite Caves Miolite Caves/Guide 240
50 Dragons Den Dragons Den/Guide 470
55 Volcanic Cave Volcanic Cave/Guide 520

Skills

Throughout the game the skills level are capped (initially to 10) which means that you will need to carefully manage resources and equipment early on. Completing a dungeon will raise your skill caps and so this is a good first goal. Fishing and cooking are locked out until much later making dungeons considerably harder, and you will need creative ways of getting those foods with higher HP.

Any skill XP earned over the ceiling cap will be deleted, but the mastery and global mastery XP work as normal.

Ancient Relics

Performing any skill will give you a (low) chance of discovering an Ancient Relic. Whilst it is possible to get all of the Ancient Relics without completing dungeons, it is not recommended. There is however a guaranteed Ancient Relic when you reach skill level 20 which is likely to happen after completing your first dungeon.

Lesser Relics

While skilling you will be rewarded with Lesser Relics which can be equipped to give boosts to that skill. One Lesser Relic will be used for every action.

Skill Balancing

When levelling up your skills it is important to consider how each skill interacts with your other skills and abilities. For example, if you level Smithing it will give you access to stronger weapons and armour, but to use this skill you will also not Mine for the raw materials and a higher combat level to wear the items you have made. Similarly, if you level Firemaking to soon then you will also need Woodcutting (or Thieving) to balance out this skill.

When to fully explore cartography

Early exploration of Cartography is recommended as it unlocks many great rewards.

However, it is not strongly recommended that you do not attempt to fully explore Cartography (or use Auto Survey) until you are able to reach Cartography Level 100. Surveying has a finite amount of XP available, and any that you waste early on could limit how much of the map you ultimately reveal.

Map creation and upgrades have unlimited XP, but these are not a generous source of XP, and will consume a lot of Paper.

Levels 1 to 10: Starting tips

Some helpful things to get you started:

  • Township Tasks: Check out the easier Township tasks as often these will give useful rewards such as food, GP or SC which can be a big boost early on.
  • Cartography: Survey the POI close to your starting position in Cartography to obtain 50 and 2000.
  • Bronze Dagger: Use a Bronze Dagger to kill 100 Plant. This will complete the township task and reward you with 2,000 Potatoes. Try to avoid eating your Shrimp as these are best used in the early dungeons.
  • Runecrafting: Magic is relatively powerful when starting out in this game mode, and Runecrafting will let you unlock more damaging spells. Mine plenty of Rune Essence to create runes and obtains staves such as the Staff of Earth which give a high damage at relative low levels. You can train Magic Level 10 on the Cow.

For combat, it is recommended that stick to Plant, Chicken and Cow until you have completed the Chicken Coop dungeon.

Levels 11 to 29: Skilling recommendations

After completing a dungeon, you will be offered a randomized selection of skills and level caps to select from. Whilst some choices might be straight-forward, it can be challenging weighing up the benefits and of each skill.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Thieving: Once you get to Thieving Level 25 you will unlock Assistant Cook which will be a great source of food. Also, you can use Thieving to get GP as well as some useful drops or ammo, as there are very few other ways to make money at this time.
  • Farming: This provides a passive source of food, herbs, and logs. For example, killing Junior Farmer until you have 3 Potato Seeds so that you can start Farming for extra food. In time, the passive benefits of Farming will give you a huge boost.
  • Astrology: Early on, there are some good passive boosts available in Astrology. However, the cost of unlocking increases quickly, so early it's a good idea to focus on small boosts, rather than trying to max out .
  • Summoning: This gives a big boost and is needed for the higher strength mobs and dungeons. For example, Golbin Thief is a good early summon that will help give the advantage in combat.
  • Slayer: The Slayer tasks will reward you with Slayer Coins which can be used to purchase Slayer re-supplies. These give you a good source of food, prayer and ammo. It is going to be a long time before you unlock Fishing and Cooking, so these re-supplied will be invaluable. Levelling Slayer will also unlock new mobs and dungeons in time.

Levels 30+: Places of Interest

At this point you will have found some Ancient Relics which will give you passive benefits. but there is still a lot to discover.

Here are some suggestions on where to go next:

Continue defeating dungeons to increase your skill caps and along the way you will discover the Ancient Relics. Good luck!

Beginners Guide

The Ancient Relics game mode is all about discovery. There is no one way to play, and this is by no means intended to be seen as the right way, or indeed the fastest way to level up.

Starting out

Start by Woodcutting. Chop down Normal Logs until you hit Woodcutting Level 10, and when unlocked chop Oak Logs. Give the first 25 Bird Nest your get to township for 5,000GP, and then open any Bird Nests and keep going until you have at least 3 of any seed (doesn't matter which) and when you have them plant them in farming. Be sure to use Weird Gloop so that the plant doesn't die and you get bigger crops. Anything you grow, you can eat, and food is going to be an ongoing challenge until fishing and cooking are unlocked.

Burn the Normal Logs until you hit Firemaking Level 10, and then burn all of your Oak Logs. You will you get some Ash from that can be buried to give you prayer points. At Firemaking Level 10 start burning Oak Logs as these earn slightly more ash. Do not light bonfires as the XP will be lost.

Mine Rune Essence until Mining Level 10 is reached and sell any jewels you uncover. Make runes Runecrafting to gather Mind Rune, Air Rune and Earth Rune. Using Normal Logs and Earth Rune craft the Staff of Earth.

Mine Tin Ore and Copper Ore in equal quantities until you hit the Mining Level 10 limit. Sell any jewels you unearth, as these will give you some early and much needed GP. Next, smith Bronze Bar. As they become unlocked, smith 1 Bronze Sword, 1 Bronze Helmet, 1 Bronze Boots and 1 Bronze Gloves. This will be your basic armour set for tackling the Chicken Coop!

Using your bronze gear, fight the Plant until you reach Attack Level 10, Strength Level 10 and Defence Level 10. Eat Potatoes as needed to avoid death as even the plant will eventually kill you. You may discover Golbin Thief, and if you do it's worth Summoning one time just to unlock this skill. Do this whether the marks unlock, as these will be useful later on.

Study Astrology to unlock Iridan and when you have enough Stardust, increase the Attack Accuracy Rating to +3%. There is no limit to how much stardust you can get, but it is not a good trade-off to collect too much Stardust as this stage, and the unlocks become disproportionately expensive.

Starting farming and Township will help you out later on, so these are worth starting as soon as you can. Ideally with some plants growing, and a basic melee build, it's time to hit the +.

Dungeon: Chicken Coop

Combat: Equip your best food and use your strongest magic spell to defeat the chicken coop, then the graveyard, and finally the spider.

Using your 100 Shrimp, it is time to battle the Chicken Coop. The first 5 monsters should be straight forward with your levelled up bronze armour, but eat sparingly if required. For the Mumma Chicken you will have a low chance of hitting her, and she will do serious damage to you fairly often. It will be an epic battle, but you should find that you can eventually defeat her by grinding down the hitpoints and eating regularly.

Once Mumma Chicken is defeated, you will gain your first set of boosts. You will be presented with a choice on which items you level up. In general, try to level the skills evenly. The exceptions to this are Farming, Township, Astrology. These are few downsides if these are levelled. Useful skills to upgrade at this early stage are Mining so that you can unlock iron weapons, Smithing so that you can complete your armour set, and Cartography so that you can earn discovery bonuses. In addition, you will be given one food crate for your trouble.

Depending on which skills you were offered and selected, it is time to consider your options. In your current state, you are much too weak to consider the next dungeon, so your best option now is to level up your newly found skills. In addition, township tasks are a good way to get some early GP funds, as you will want to open up some more farming slots, and purchase more buildings in Township. If all else fails, then consider Astrology as the golden stardust can be used to give some further strength bonused.

Dungeon: Undead Graveyard

Keep skilling all of the newly updated skills until you earn your first File:Ancient Relic (item).png Ancient Relic. You can View Ancient Relics to read more about the skill and it's rewards. Most of the skills will guarantee a relic when you get to Template:SkillReg, and so you should be able to get at least one File:Ancient Relic (item).png Ancient Relic for your troubles. You will note too that your combat level has raised by +5 XP which will be needed for the next dungeon.

You will be allocated a random permanent boost to the skill that you happen to be doing at the time, but every boost will give you a big advantage in that skill, even if it doesn't seem that way at first. Continue levelling up and collecting relics until you are able to unlock stronger weapons and armour (melee) or some runes in magic. There is no point starting fletching you have unlocked more levels in both woodcutting and fletching as the bronze arrows are not great. Continue chopping wood, and making fire - although you will be losing valuable XP, the mastery perks of Template:Skilll will help all of the other skills. If you find any Lesser Relics in your wallet, then these are normally worth equipping to give you a further boost in the skill that you are working on.

Undead Graveyard

It is going to be an uphill struggle going from the relatively easy Chicken Coop, to the Undead Graveyard, especially now that the starting supply of Shrimp has been mostly used up already. And it's unlikely that you will have sufficient skill levelling, weapons or food to tackle this dungeon.

Armour/weapons: use skilling to try and increase your armour. This could be through thieving, Smithing or even Cartography. Use your strengths to your advantage. But remember that you will only be able to equip armour and weapons that are skill level <=15. Purchase at least one Mark of the Golbin summon.

Food: continue to chop wood to collect seeds from bird nests. You can eat what you grow, and levelling up farming will give you benefits along the way. You will need Thieving Level 26 before you can start getting food from the Assistant Cook, so this is not an option until a bit later in the game, but levelling up thieving is recommended as it gives you money as well as items.

  • GP: thieving is probably the easiest way to make money at this stage, and you are free to sell any items that you don't need, but it is best to try and establish an income source early on.
