Some people play alternative versions of this gamemode.
While HCCO is believed to having been created by CoolRox, they never played this game mode themselves. From the recorded history, it is not entirely known who was the first player who took this challenge seriously, although it's possible it was bad_name_2009#6633. Regardless, some honorable mentions are 8992#7954, JHawk55#8345, Nomeru#4261 who all played a non-official hardcore version of this gamemode (where regen applied).

One of these variants (called HCCO 12 Bank Slots or HCCO12B) includes limiting themselves to the starting 12 bank slots.
After Hardcore was introduced, the only way to actually start a character in this game mode was by doing one of two things:
* Spam {{ItemIcon|Lemonade}} from the [[Easter Eggs|Easter egg]]
* Fight the {{MonsterIcon|Confused Pirate}}, and flee before they hit you (since they have a slower attack than the player).

Another style (called Hardcore No Gathering, or HCNG), allows using some non-combat skills, but none of the gathering-skills. This means they can't use {{Skill|Woodcutting}}, {{Skill|Fishing}}, {{Skill|Mining}}, {{Skill|Farming}}, but they can use the resources they gain from killing enemies. As a note, they will not be able to level {{Skill|Firemaking}}, as there is no way to obtain {{ItemIcon|Normal Logs}} without {{Skill|Woodcutting}}.
After seeing that HCCO was feasibly possible, some player figured out "Why not play it with no extra bank slots, instead?", and created what eventually became a trend amongst the challenger-community. There are a few noteworthy players including IzzyYSN#0220, and Hashtronomy#9283.
