Once the first Mark for a given Familiar has been found, the player will not find any more marks until they [[#Tablets|create at least one Summoning Tablet]] for that familiar.
Being a tier 1 summon, the "average" time for a mark is 20 mins, excluding any "downtime such as waiting for ore respawn in mining, time spent stunned in thieving and time waiting for monsters to respawn in combat.
This increases to 45 mins for tier 2 summons and 80 mins for tier 3 summons.
Mark Chance is based on fastest possible interval for artisan skills, so having all upgrades will increase your chances - the interval for these skills are based on the following:

Firemaking - 60% of the log's base burn interval

Your first mark will get you straight to level 1.
Mark Chance is based on fastest possible interval for artisan skills, so having all upgrades will increase your chances - the interval for these skills are based on the following:
A further 5 marks will make it level 2.
{{ActionTimeOverrideTable}}
10 more marks will get you to 3.
Finally 15 more marks will get you to max level of 4, a total of 31 marks in total for level 4.

Marks can be found offline, its the same rate as online.
For tips on how to maximise the chance of discovering marks, see [[Summoning#Maximising Mark Discovery Chance|Maximising Mark Discovery Chance]].
Unfortunately multi hit spells/weapons/specs such as twin exiles does NOT increase your mark chance, multi hits are rolled once not per hit.
Combat marks are rolled per hit and not per kill.
You CAN gain magic marks from alt magic.
You CANNOT gain strength marks from barbarian fishing.

Mark chance per action: Action's Interval(seconds) / ((Mark Tier + 1)² * 300)

Using tablets on the skill you acquired the mark from grants Summoning XP, and much more XP than creating tablets so using tablets is the quicker method of gaining Summoning levels. The XP/second gained increases with the Summoning level required for that familiar, and uses the following formula:

Using tablets on the skill you got the mark from gains exp, and much more exp than creating tablets so its a good way to level.

Base xp per tablet use: (Action's Interval(seconds) * summonLevel) / ((summonLevel + 10) / 10)
<math>\text{Base XP Gained per Tablet Use} = \frac{\text{Action Time (seconds)} \times \text{Summoning Level Required} \times 10}{\text{Summoning Level Required} + 10}</math>
Where summonLevel is the level that is required to craft that tablet.

In a synergy, just apply that once for each tablet used. In most cases, 2x for one and 1x for the other.
As is the case with [[#Marks|Marks]], certain skills used a fixed value for the action time when determining the amount of XP gained per tablet.

Similar to mastery XP, some skills use a fixed value for the time per action regardless of the player's bonuses;
If using a [[Summoning#Synergies|synergy]], simply apply this formula once for each tablet used - in most cases, this will be 2 tablets used for one familiar, and 1 for the other.

Having multiple familiars (tier 1) of at least level 2 or higher will start to unlock Synergies.
For the best XP rates, it is suggested to unlock these synergies as soon as you can by leveling up marks.
Synergies give increased bonuses than just the one familiar by itself, as well as more exp per action.
Higher tier (2 and 3) familiars need higher mark levels for their synergies to unlock than tier 1 familiars, but again these award more XP.
For best exp you want to try and unlock these synergies as soon as you can by levelling up marks.
Higher tier (2 and 3) summons need higher level levels for their synergies to unlock than tier 1, but again award more exp.

For the non-shard items, before cost reductions, a total of {{GP|1000}} worth of items needs to be supplied per craft, with the exception that items that have a value before {{GP|20}} are considered to have a value of {{GP|20}}. In the case of items that can be bought via the [[Township]] [[Trading Post]], it is much more cost-efficient efficient to buy the cheapest resource, that is, to buy [[Normal Logs]], [[Garum Herb]]s, [[Copper Ore]], and [[Bronze Bar]]s to make [[Ent]], [[Mole]], [[Bear]] and [[Salamander]] tablets. Marks

Marks are the first thing you need to get in Summoning. At level 1, the options are Attack, Strength, Defence, or Woodcutting.

Once the first Mark for a given Familiar has been found, the player will not find any more marks until they create at least one Summoning Tablet for that familiar.

The average time to acquire marks varies with both the tier of the summoning familiar and whether the player has that familiar equipped. The average times shown below are excluding any downtime such as waiting for ore to respawn in Mining, time spent stunned in Thieving, and time waiting for Monsters to respawn in Combat.

Average Time to Acquire Marks (minutes)
Tier Familiar Equipped?
No Yes (Combat) Yes (Non-Combat)
1 20 11.43 10
2 45 25.71 22.50
3 80 45.71 40

Mark Chance is based on fastest possible interval for artisan skills, so having all upgrades will increase your chances - the interval for these skills are based on the following:

Skill Seconds per Action
Firemaking 60% of the log's base burn interval
Cooking 85% of the recipe's base cooking interval
Smithing 1.7
Fletching 1.3
Crafting 1.65
Runecrafting 1.7
Herblore 1.7
Summoning 4.85

For tips on how to maximise the chance of discovering marks, see Maximising Mark Discovery Chance.

Chance of acquiring Summoning marks of each tier over time, assuming that the familiar whose marks are being discovered is not equipped.

Tablets

Once you have your first mark you can start creating tablets in the familiars tab of the Summoning page.

Each tablet will have multiple recipes to create, so make sure you check them all for a recipe that suits you. Each recipe consumes shards, which can be purchased from the in game Shop.

Using tablets on the skill you acquired the mark from grants Summoning XP, and much more XP than creating tablets so using tablets is the quicker method of gaining Summoning levels. The XP/second gained increases with the Summoning level required for that familiar, and uses the following formula:

[math]\displaystyle{ \text{Base XP Gained per Tablet Use} = \frac{\text{Action Time (seconds)} \times \text{Summoning Level Required} \times 10}{\text{Summoning Level Required} + 10} }[/math]

As is the case with Marks, certain skills used a fixed value for the action time when determining the amount of XP gained per tablet.

If using a synergy, simply apply this formula once for each tablet used - in most cases, this will be 2 tablets used for one familiar, and 1 for the other.

Synergies

Having multiple familiars of at least level 2 or higher will start to unlock Synergies. Synergies grant additional bonuses over those given by using the familiars by themselves, as well as more XP per action.

For the best XP rates, it is suggested to unlock these synergies as soon as you can by leveling up marks. Higher tier (2 and 3) familiars need higher mark levels for their synergies to unlock than tier 1 familiars, but again these award more XP.

Township Trader

For the non-shard items, before cost reductions, a total of Coins.svg 1,000 worth of items needs to be supplied per craft, with the exception that items that have a value before Coins.svg 20 are considered to have a value of Coins.svg 20. In the case of items that can be bought via the Township Trading Post, it is much more cost-efficient efficient to buy the cheapest resource, that is, to buy Normal Logs, Garum Herbs, Copper Ore, and Bronze Bars to make Ent, Mole, Bear and Salamander tablets. This strategy does not apply to Food items - the player should instead buy high-tier food items from the Trader.
